Chocolate Cupcakes
"I've got to stop at Costco's before we go home. It won't take long 'cause I have to be back at the house by 4."
Carol announced this matter-of-fact as they sped along the freeway rather than asking if it would be okay. When Lana went anywhere with Carol it was understood that they would be going to the planned destination and five or six more. Some days they left home at 8:30 or 9 in the morning and Lana wouldn't get home until just before Neil got home at 5 p.m. But, Carol was always willing to get Lana home earlier if necessary. And, thankfully, Neil had no problem with this.
"The grand kids will be coming over on Saturday, so I want to make sure I have plenty of food in the house."
Lana looked at Carol and laughed, "Carol, there's always plenty of food in your house, and what you don't have you make it faster than anyone I know. I wish I knew how you can bake so quickly and yet you can have it cleaned up in no time at all."
"I don't want to bake this weekend, but I always cook. I like to cook. And they like to eat what I cook, so I need to make sure I have it there. You don't like to cook anymore, do you?"
A look of dismay fell on Lana's countenance. She loved to cook, but only for family. Cooking for Neil just was no fun because he would eat anything she fixed. She tried new recipes all the time just to make it fun, but she didn't eat it most of the time. When the family came to visit she cooked a lot, and her daughter, Kelly, liked to bake.
"I need to get some desserts for Neil's lunches," Lana reminded herself out loud. "Some chocolate cupcakes, or something like that."
"For Neil, or for you?" Carol teased somberly, knowing Lana's weakness for chocolate cupcakes.
"Both, of course." Lana laughed.
Inside the big store both women pushed a shopping cart and went in different directions. Eventually they would meet, but neither wanted to go to the same areas, and it saved time to shop separately. Lana knew that she would be done before Carol, so she took her time looking at the books and seasonal furniture. By the time she had found all she needed she was surprised to find Carol in one of the checkout lines. They visited while they waited, then went out to load the SUV.
"I see you found the cupcakes," Carol baited Lana.
"I see you also found the cupcakes," Lana shot back in fun. "Sounded pretty good, didn't they?"
As they pulled out of the lot Carol turned to Lana and almost under her breath she said, "I think I want a chocolate cupcake."
"Now?" Lana mouthed the question.
"Yes! Now! But don't open your case. Open mine. Save yours for Neil."
Lana reached over the back of the seat and tore the cellophane on one of the cases of cupcakes. When her hands entered back into the front she possessed two packages of cupcakes, two in each package. Both women said absolutely nothing, opened the packages and silently enjoyed two chocolate cupcakes.
They finished the scrumptious treats and looked sheepishly at one another.
"Ooooh." Carol was the first to speak. "That was wonderful."
Lana wasn't sure if Carol spoke the words or purred.
"I want another one," Carol looked at Lana questioning, and Lana took the cue. She dove over the seat to once more emerge with two packages. They ate in silence again.
"What's WRONG with us?" Carol drawled when she had finished her cupcakes.
"I don't know," answered Lana with her mouth still full of chocolate, "but this is the best time I've had in a long, long time."
All Carol had to do was look at Lana for her to make another trip into the back seat.
The two friends spoke very little on the drive home. In only minutes they arrived at Lana's house, but long enough for each one to have devoured six packages of chocolate cupcakes. Before she left Carol's car, Lana gathered all the papers and packaging and stuffed them into the gaping space in the case where six packages of cupcakes used to reside. Even Carol, was giggling. They were remorseful for their gluttony, but neither woman would have spent their ride differently. They knew they would regret it in the worst way. They were drunk on chocolate cupcakes, and the hangover was sure to be somewhere other than their head.
